Fire Emblem: The Age of Legend
The Northern Principalities is a medium country in the far northwest of Feryngia according to most. As its name suggests though, it is less a real country in any formal sense than a collection of most of a hundred tiny countries of similar culture and history who occasionally ally with one another.
Region: Northwestern Nations
Emblem: None in common, each prince has his own heraldry.
Capital: None, generally each prince of the Northern Principalities controls one city and several outlying towns as well as local farms and they bow to no man.
Largest City: Miffin, relatively populous because of its southerly location and strangehold on trade with Yeoria and good natural harbor. Small by any other country’s standards though. Population roughly 15,000.
Other Prominent Cities: Tejian, itself a poor backwater on the far northern isles but brought to rare prominence by its formidable and canny ruler, Orivin the Frostbeard King. Anvrelle in the far east has also been a fairly rare success story over the last century and has gained a fair amount of local wealth and power.
Currency: Silver North-Ring. However in dire financial times any princes who want to can and do coin their own money, though most others will not accept it.
Government: No overarching one to speak of. The various princes and occasionally elected rulers of this land may do whatever they please and often do. Each of their lands is completely sovereign and they often war with and raid one another. Now and then though they can be driven by circumstances to widely accepted treaties of one sort or another.
Population: Roughly 2,500,000. Terrible climate, sparse settlement, disorganization, and often tyrannical rule leave this land as sparsely populated as Seforibar. Serfdom is common in these lands, many local tyrants refuse to accept anyone who insists on freedom into their fortresses in times of war (which are nearly always) or outright enserf the free by force.
Area: Roughly 180,000 square miles.
Geographical Features: Most of the Northern Principalities is a large, low sea-plain often covered in forests and bogs when not completely snowbound. In the north this gives way to a chain of rocky and generally even more inhospitable islands. Most of it is rural and public life is overwhelmingly local due to the lack of any supra-petty tyrant authority and a dearth of roads. As if being the northernmost country on the continent was not bad enough, the Northern Principalities are further cooled by a cold ocean current passing nearby and are snowed on quite often, receiving little real sunlight.
Borders: The Eversever Ocean to the west, Iborean Ocean to the north, a small border with Yeoria often targeted for raids, and a long but often impassable mountainous border with Snorivia.
Military: Every prince worth his name maintains his own private army generally including a professional corps of men at arms. Nearly all the fit men and quite a few women of the Northern Principalities are veteran warriors as well, many will have been either the targets or the perpetrators of raids from childhood and so had to learn to fight just to survive. They are generally fierce if unskilled and poorly armed fighters in times of need and no northern prince ever lacks for volunteering men when planning to plunder a wealthier neighbor. Although men from this harsh land are eagerly snapped up as individual mercenaries, few real companies exist here because they would be just as likely to seize a throne as to serve it since the rulers are so individually weak and poor. The military might of the Northern Principalities on the few occasions like the Grand Alliance of the Northern Star that it has been wielded collectively is a force to be reckoned with by even the likes of Peruvia who very much fear a new such alliance, but generally the forces of individual lords are not much of a threat except when quickly looting small communities.
History: The Northern Principalities have changed remarkably little over time, in a sense they present the face of the Northwestern Nations as each of them was centuries or millennia ago before unifications of various sorts began. They have endured in their ever-shifting and chaotic state since the early centuries of the Second Age and might well endure centuries more before finally being conquered or unified. There has long been a faint current of opinion pushing for unification and peace despite harsh repression from princes who want to keep their absolute power. Some notable successes this movement likes to point to include the adoption of the Silver North-Ring as a common currency in 2A 2079, the brief but successful Grand Alliance of the Northern Star formed in 2A 2227 that bested the might of Peruvia, and the forging of modern day Yeoria from a slew of petty states that had previously been part of the Northern Principalities as recently as 2A 3049. However at least for the present it is likely they will continue on as they have: raiding their neighbors opportunistically, warring and intriguing against one another, and scraping out subsistence from the miserable land.
